Wash n Go Puff on Type 4a/3c Hair

wash n go puff
There are many places experiencing cold snowy weather. That is definitely not the case here in Guam so I’ve been wearing my natural hair out a lot more. My favorite style is a wash n go puff. This style is easy to maintain so it is a win for me. I don’t follow a hair chart faithfully because most people have multiple textures on their head. I understand that some people still find it helpful so my hair is mostly 4a with parts of 4b and 3c. I’ve also included a video below for reference. Make sure to check that out. With that out the way here’s how I do my puff!

Materials Needed:

Spray Bottle w/water
DevaCurl B’ leave-in or homemade flaxseed gel
Shea Moisture’s Curl Enchancing Smoothie
Eco Styler Gel (green-olive oil)
Schwarzkopf Ultra Glued gel
Denman brush and/or wide tooth comb
Boar bristle brush
Ponytail holder
Scarf to set style
Clips for sectioning (optional)

How to style the puff

  1. On freshly washed and conditioned hair, detangle, then pull all hair into a ponytail with the ponytail holder. Tie the holder around as many times as needed to hold the style secure. I like to position my hair high up on my head.
  2. Apply the Eco Styling gel to the perimeter of your hair then smooth with the boar bristle brush.
  3. On top of that apply a little of the Ultra Glued gel to your edges.
  4. Wrap the perimeter of your head with a scarf so that your ponytail will set in place.
  5. Now to layer products for definition. Apply a small amount of B’leave-in, Enhancing Smoothie, and then a generous amount of Eco gel in small sections of the hair.
  6. Smooth until well saturated. If your hair starts to get dry, spritz it with water and continue.
  7. After all products are applied remove the ponytail holder. Place it on again but apply it loosely over the scarf. This will allow the shape to set without extra tension on your hair.
  8. Allow the style to air dry or sit under a hooded dryer to speed up the process.
  9. Once the style is dry remove the scarf and reposition the ponytail holder loosely on the hair. Fluff and curl then you are set.

Preserving and refreshing puff

To preserve the puff at night wrap the perimeter of your hair with a scarf and remove the ponytail holder. Sleep on a satin/silk pillow case or cover hair with a satin bonnet. In the morning remove the scarf and spritz with water to refresh. If there are curls that need a little more defining add more gel. This style will last until your next wash day! If there are areas that start to get white add a little oil to loosen.

Transitioning this style

If you don’t plan on wearing this style to your next wash day apply the layered products to all of your hair before pulling it in a ponytail. When you are ready for a different style spray your hair with water to loosen the gel then style. Your curls will be prepped for the next natural style of your choosing.

I hope you find this look helpful…or at least entertained by how I do my hair lol! Stay warm out there.

Thanks for hanging out!
